Back in 2019, my husband Alex and I started to seriously consider and contemplate moving back to his home country Guatemala permanently once our kids started college. Alex grew up in Guatemala and I grew up in Kenya, surrounded by family and agriculture. We both relocated to the United States as adults. As we worked harder we continually missed the slower pace of life, work-life balance where we could spend more time with family and cultivate relationships. The more I visited Guate, the more I fell in love with the country in terms of culture, climate and quality of a slower pace of life. We always had a desire to retire in Guatemala or Kenya.
So, back in February 2020, right around the time that the pandemic was starting to be a global phenomenon, we did a thing! We bought undeveloped farm land in the department of Peten, Guatemala. The goal was to start developing the land for cattle farming and permaculture. We named this farm Finca Riziki. Riziki is a swahili word that means daily sustenance and blessings. Fast forward to 2021 and we moved to Guatemala and invested in another farm.
There have been adjustments in our family, like having me travel back to the United States for work. I wanted to start this blog as an informational resource for folks who are interested in Guatemala, be it as visitors or long term residents. I will be sharing information about our journey, both successes, failures and lessons learned along the way. There are many positives in Guatemala but there are also challenges. There are also regions that are less known than some like Antigua. My hope is to highlight the well known regions and some hidden gems and what they have to offer. Lastly, I will be including informational articles as well, especially for folks considering long term stays.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing from you.
